    And this is part of the reason why as I get older (39 now), I fantasize about becoming an absolute eldrich horror of an old woman. It feels like it would be a rebelion against a society that I was constantly told I not pretty enough for. I was a very late bloomer and struggled with my weight until I found a way to manage my hormone imbalance better in my early 30's. My acne scars are still red under my makeup. When I did get thinner and 'slightly above average' pretty, I sure "got more attention" but most of it was disrespectful and unkind. The prettiest girl I knew in high school had been s. trafficked for years by her own father to further his career. That was the first time I realized how dangerous it was to be beautiful. And the first moment I was greatful that I was plain and "fat" (read, perfectly healthy but not fashionably thin). And after dating around for 15 years, I've lost most my interest in men. Most of them seem to have very little to offer me and want me to slave away in joyful gratitude in return. I like some men very much, but just a very small number of them ;) I'm going to try and stay thin for a while since it fits my new career path better, but if I had enough money not to be concerned with what clients would think; I'd love to grow a poisonous garden in the woods in a blackened mostrosity of a house surrounded by wolves and crows and I'd shave off all my hair and get fat! And wear beautiful gowns stained with blood and garden soil. And swim naked with my lady friends, walk everywhere barefooted and publicly criticize stupid and evil people fearlessly. Hahaha! What fun that would be! And what good revenge on society: I'd be a living reminder that women are powerful human spirits and not plastic objects made for men's pleasure. I would be so obviously joyful in that condition that I would remind women they are fully human and insight rebelion everywhere I went. And I would embarrass, humble and frighten men with fragile egos. The only fantasy better in my opinion would be to have the power to transform into a dragon or literal monster on comand. I'm partial to the idea of a powerful and nearly imposible to kill warewolf shape, especially. If I was 9 feet tall with a mouth full of sharp teeth I think I would smile for the rest of my life ❤

    I perceived her seeing the world in color after her sexual encounter with a man not as a romanticized liberation and awakening but rather an uncomfortably realization of the world as it is. The mise en scene works better in black and white. This is something I noticed from a technic perspectives. The world seems more tangible and sensible in black and white. But the color reveals that the world is a fake collection of sets. It feels like a comment on the unrealistic space women are forced to occupy. Bella now sees this world and quickly because unattached and bored with Duncan after he gets what he wanted from her. She realizes he isn’t everything she thought he was. The color represents man’s undoing and loss of dominance in the narrative they try to control.

    I now have a perspective that absolutely changed the way I see this film and interpersonal of it. As a young girl (and to an extent, still now, but I admit I still feel insecure. Thanks, Mass media...) I never cared for appearing "trendy" or beautiful to a standard of the modern day. I never understood why my mother told me I had to put on acne cream/wash my face so much or I'd "look like her". I always thought she was beautiful. I never saw anything wrong with her. She meant some sun spots and acne scars. However I've learned something else about myself. So fun fact about me- I have a few nerves in one cheek on my face that's disconnected from birth. No medical issues caused by it. But I recently learned that when I was at youngest 6 oldest 12, a doctor who examined my cheek said "well, she'll want botox... But only one side!!!" I WAS A CHILD. Learning about this as a young adult made me reflect a lot on this. Supposedly the doctor that told me this was a top plastic surgeon in my country. I don't remember it well because I was a child, and I was more preoccupied with the books in the waiting rooms at the children's hospital and having the day off school. TLDR about my facial nerves, they got disconnected in my right cheek at birth, and I can't move that side of my face that much. The worst it did was make me self conscious about my smile. It can't be surgically fixed. But I never wanted to fix my face. I couldn't and still can't imagine being able to fully smile. I'm happy with myself. Another thing was online, I saw a video of a 45 year old woman who started her video saying that aging was nothing for young girls to be afraid of... Right before she encouraged getting Botox. It makes me so mad we feel like this and how age is so stigmatized. Thanks for making the video!

    I think its interesting you call the Unicorn Amalthea throught the video, because to my mind, they're almost two separate characters. The Unicorn doesn't have a name at first because to be a unicorn is to be a symbol, to be something higher than human understanding, to fit some of your themes, this aspect of her character is like god; god not really being a name so much as something you call the character of god because its beyond our comprehension. When she turns into a human, at first she asserts that she is simply a unicorn, not anything else, and Schmendrick gives her the name. This part parallels god coming to earth in the form of Jesus. As she becomes a human she forgets being a unicorn, which to me reinforces their separation into two aspects of the same character, not interchangeable, but certainly not separatable either. And when she returns to her unicorn form, the two aspects have conjoined, meaning she is not quite either anylonger while also being both. She herself announces her difference from every other unicorn in the final lines. I am personally not religious so pardon the lack of expansion on the religious allegorical parts, to me its more of an abstractly spirtual tale. I dont deny that The Unicorn is symbolically feminine, but for me its more like women have aspects of a spirtual concept that the unicorn represents, rather than the unicorn having womanly traits. I feel she is sort of above human concepts of womanhood and this is why she is so gracious to Molly (which confused me as kid; i thought she should be mad at molly for yelling about things she didnt have control over, but symbollically she does have control over these things. Shes spirtual, she IS the concept) and why she doesnt have human reaction towards the Harpy. Shes symbollically and spiritually the divine feminine in the same way the harpy is, different aspects, but not separate as they arent exactly individuals. Sorry this may have gotten rambly i have a lot of thoughts and im typing at work.

    I remember reading the Silmarillion, the part where Tinuviel (the most beautiful elven lady that ever lived) meets Baren and later marries him. With the lens that you have portrayed in this video, I was able to better understand why she would give up immortality, wealth, and safety to live with a man who doesn't have much to give she besides his heart. And again with Arwen and Aragorn, both of whom had to undergo trials before they could have their happy ending. Even though I wish Tolkien had expanded a little more on those stories from the female's perspective, it's good that Tolkien understood what true love is.

    Body type plays a big role in this. I developed as an hour glass at 12yrs old and still dress modestly. I’m 42 and the constant shaming, hatred and entitlement has never ceased. It doesn’t matter what I wear, what my hair looks like, if I smile, if I keep my gaze down. It’s my very existence that people find offensive. To be clear, I’m not complaining but it has been painful.

    When growing up watching this movie, I always loved the depth the story gave. As a kid, I could never really enjoy a movie unless it had depth. I've been on this Earth long enough to know both men and women are capable of toxic behavior. Both men and women are capable of positive behavior too. It's not just one gender.

    this movie bothered me so much. One thing I haven't seen being talked about is that when God finds Victoria's body, there is apparently still a tiny spark of life in her. That's when he decides to remove her brain. She wasn't dead, but instead of trying to revive her, he actually kills her. She might have been beyond saving, but still. How would he know? This also relates to bodily autonomy. A woman has no right to her own body. She chose to end her life, but her body is still the possession of a man and must be made useful for the man.

  • @highfae
    @highfae День назад

    I think this perspective falls short because it isn’t for women. At least it isn’t meant to portray the female perspective. It is the current male perspective on a potential autonomous female, in the male collective. The idea of what it is to be a woman is evolving in them, and this is the current form they’re playing with. Like Aphrodite, emerging fully-formed and ready to be bedded by: everyone, eventually. She is basically the prototype hermaphrodite, a woman’s body with a man’s sensibilities (essentially, a ‘man’ is an involved woman, Bella at this stage (the end of the movie) has not fully Become).

    I'm 24 minutes into your essay and I'll never watch that movie. First of all, if they faq that much in a movie, then the movie has no story of value to tell, it's just trying to reel in teenagers. Secondly and honest to god, why would I want to watch a movie about a toddler fumbling themselves and getting railed all the time? Except I'm a pe do and that movie would get me double off because it makes my messed up desires socially acceptable.

    Men are extremely self centered to the point of sociopathy. Look at how men treat unattractive women (completely unrelated women) and attractive women. (Both get treated like crap at the end of day, one is disregarded/put down and one is lusted over/used as a trophy and s x object)
